I am Serge, co-founder of Kids R Us English and Head Teacher at the school. I am very passionate about teaching English to children and here is why. Every single day, I am fortunate enough to get to touch their lives through doing a work that shapes their attitude towards English and that enables some to believe in themselves a little bit more.
我是Serge, 爾思美語的共同創辦人與主任教師. 我非常熱衷教孩子美語.因為, 每一天, 我何其有幸能透過做一件形塑他們對於美語態度的工作來觸及他們的生活,並讓一些孩子開始相信自己多一點.
We were all born with this innate ability to speak languages, independently of our degree of intelligence, and to communicate with the people that matter to us. Therefore, speaking English is something that any child can achieve. He did it with Chinese. He can do it again with English as a second language.
我們與生俱來就有可以說語言的能力, 用來與跟我們有關係的人來溝通, 跟聰明與否一點關係都沒有. 因此說美語是一件任何一個孩子絕對都可以做到的事, 他流利的中文是這樣來的, 他可以將同樣的能力展現在他的第二語言美語上.
I fluently speak four languages. I have studied two others - Latin and German - which I don't speak. I have lived for 6 years in a country where they speak Arabic and yet, I don't speak a word of Arabic. So, you can trust me on this one. The only way to learn to speak a language is through speaking it. The study and the mastery of the rules of grammar or the fact of being in an environment where everybody else but you speaks English will not help much.
我可以很流利地說四種語言. 除了之外, 我還研讀過兩種語言 – 拉丁語與德語 – 但我不會說. 我曾經住在一個說阿拉伯語的國家長達6年, 我卻連一個阿拉伯字都說不出來. 這點, 你真的要相信我: 唯一學會說一種語言的方法是要說它. 文法規則研讀地再怎麼爐火純青, 或是處在一個每個人都說美語, 只有你不會, 所謂全英文的環境, 幫助其實不太大!
And yet my experience of five years teaching English in 補習班, 安親班, Kindergarten, or at Elementary School was that there is too much of studying and less of learning.
再加上, 我六年以上於補習班、安親班、幼稚園與國小的美語教學經驗, 都是太多的研讀(studying), 太少真正的學習(learning)!
So a little more than 3 years ago, I started KRU with my wife with the clear intent to do just the opposite: more of learning and less of studying. Kids R US is committed to teaching English as a means of communication and interaction – a living and useful skill for learners – rather than just a subject to study, be tested and graded for.
所以, 我與我太太開始了爾思美語(KRU, Kids R Us), 很清楚地知道這兒要做的是 : 更多真正的學習, 更少的死讀書. 爾思美語致力於將美語當作一種溝通與互動的工具來教育孩子, 是一種生活化且有用的技能, 而非只是被用來讀書, 考試並給分數的科目.
As a teacher, I really believe that the most valuable thing we can give to our students is the confidence and the willingness to use whatever limited English they possess to speak without the fear of being wrong. How do we do that? By slowly building their confidence through activities where they experience success very early on; by teaching them skills that empower them rather than scare them; by creating an environment where we care more about what you say than how you say it… We teach English in a way that kids want to learn it. And they learn it by doing the only thing they care to do well: playing.
作為一個老師, 我堅定地相信, 我們可以給孩子的最有價值的東西是信心和那個願意使用他們極有限的英語來說話而不用害怕錯誤的心情! 我們如何做到這一點? 通過他們一開始就能達到成功的活動, 一點一滴慢慢建立他們的信心; 透過教導他們賦予他們力量而不是嚇倒他們的方法; 透過創造一個我們比較關心你說了甚麼而非你說的句子對不對的環境氛圍… 我們用孩子想要學習的方式來教美語. 而他們透過做他們唯一關心且做得好的事情來學習它: 玩！
